Healthcare CEOs Shoot Themselves in the Foot →
This is one of many reasons that the U.S. healthcare system is completely f-ed up:
….Late in the hearing, [Bart] Stupak, the committee chairman, put the executives on the spot. Stupak asked each of them whether he would at least commit his company to immediately stop rescissions except where they could show “intentional fraud.” The answer from all three executives:...

This is clearly a case of property rights gone awry:
As things now stand, approximately 10,000 cases have been filed and another 20,000 or so await filing. That’s 30,000 cases for 18,000 Palauans – quite a handsome ratio. And that’s not just because a few Palauans are filing a lot of cases, for one estimate is that 99 percent of Palauans are involved in land claims.
What’s fascinating is why...

FP Passport | State Department intervened with... →
I assumed Twitter had delayed their scheduled maintenance on their own accord yesterday. But it sounds like there was at least some nudging, independently consequential or not:
The US government asked Twitter to delay maintenance plans in order to allow Iranians to communicate while their government banned other media following elections, a US official said Tuesday.

How to Teach a Child to Argue →
dadadada:
Why would any sane parent teach his kids to talk back? Because, this father found, it actually increased family harmony. By Jay Heinrichs.
I can see this being a good set of skills for kids to build on top of the Love and Logic approach.

A Professor’s Prayer →
Lord, grant me the courage to fail the students I cannot pass, the strength to grade 100+ finals and 20+ lab reports, and the cockroach-level survival skills needed if a mentally unstable grade grubber gets an A-.
Won’t be saying this prayer until December. [Via The Monkey Cage]

Study: TV May Inhibit Babies’ Language Development →
As most parents of small children will reluctantly admit, nothing can occupy a child quite like television. Unfortunately, the scientific evidence suggests that using the boob tube as a babysitter has its price: the more time babies spend sitting in front of the screen, the more their social, cognitive and language development may suffer. Recent studies show that TV-viewing tends to decrease...

Whole Wheat Fusilli with Three Greens and Cherry...
We started getting the “medium box” from Colorado Door to Door Organics. This is the only second week of the weekly delivery service, but we’re already loving the great vegetables and fruits. Despite the ability to make up to three substitutions ahead of time, we still end up with some interesting items. One such item was carrots with green tops. Although I was about to chop them off and toss...

Local Network Effects in Tumblr
So, Tumblr introduced a great feature that many social networking sites have. Put in your e-mail address/credentials and then it will comb through your address book to see if anyone you know is using Tumblr. I tried that this morning, and ended up with one contact. Only one among my 200+ contacts in my address book has a Tumblr account, and that person isn’t even using it.
The local networks...

Lessons of Baby Care
Although now starting to get better, Xander had two difficult nights this week. The second time that he was screaming his head off, nothing was consoling him (this was at 3:30AM). I tried to tickle him around his collarbone, which always makes him giggle uncontrollably. Apparently, not always. Trying to tickle a baby when they’re upset only makes them more upset.

Random Thoughts on Fatherhood, Part II
A while back I reflected on a bunch of different issues about being a father. This one contains a bit more focused set of thoughts on time management.
Parents automatically become very efficient at getting things done. Taking care of babies takes time, and I want to spend time with my kid. That means less time for whatever else needs to get done (at least in the absence of a time machine or a...

Panko-Covered Tilapia Fillets with Dijon Yogurt...
Before I forget. This is what I created last Tuesday for dinner.
Tilapia fillets dredged in flour, beaten egg and then covered in whole wheat panko bread crumbs (more on “panko” later). Fried in a lightly oiled pan until golden brown on both sides.
Here’s my creation: about a cup of non-fat plain yogurt (I guess higher fat content would do just fine), about a table spoon of dijon mustard and...
